June 2026: Twenty‑three‑year‑old Abubakar Bangura has been remanded pending sentencing after appearing before Hon. Justice Mustapha Mohamed Bawoh at High Court No. 2 in Freetown on charges of larceny.
Bangura was convicted on two counts of larceny, contrary to Section 2 of the Larceny Act of 1961. According to the charge sheet, on February 19, 2025, at Freetown Park in Waterloo, he broke into the Arafat Investment Store and stole Le40,000 in cash, property of Abu Bakarr Jalloh.
During proceedings, defence counsel C. Taylor Young was present while the State Prosecutor was absent. In his plea in mitigation, counsel noted that Bangura had already pleaded guilty and urged the court to show mercy, stressing that no prior criminal record had been presented against the convict. He appealed for the court to consider sentencing Bangura to the period already spent in custody.
After hearing the plea, Justice Bawoh adjourned the matter to June 9, 2026, for judgment and sentencing.
